1. About us:

The Department of Microbiology at NTU Medical School has, since its origin in 1947, been exceptionally active and well-organized in education and in research. Locating at the core of Taipei city, the department owns complete and comfortable traffic system which contains bus, transit system or railway to everywhere. By means of the NTU hospital next to medical school, the department of Microbiology can invite lots of researchers associated with clinical medicine to investigate the academic fields and share the scientific resources. Besides, the library in medical school possesses the most abundant electronic resources and journals in Taiwan. There are many academic institutes, such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Academia Sinica, Genomic research center and department of health, adjacent to the department of Microbiology. This multidisciplinary environment provides students having enterprising spirit opportunities to obtain abundant knowledge about Microbiology and its related field. Even though your backgrounds are different or insufficient in this field, we provide the platform of the various Microbiology courses, such as introduction of microbiology, advanced microbiology, molecular biology, etc. In addition, many of the labs in our department offer opportunities to understand a particular aspect of bacteria, virus, cancer, immunology, gene therapy by utilizing logic thought and advanced scientific techniques, and these skills will be tremendously valuable as a student pursues a goal of becoming a research scientist.

In 2002, the Department of Microbiology has attentively designed a program, microbial genomics, collaborated with Institute of Biomedical Sciences in Academia Sinica, the greatest national research institute in Taiwan. By engaging in lecture, this program encourages students to develop a scientific thought and to promote the mutual exchange of research ideas.

In the latest 5 years, many faculties have received numerous prizes, like Academia Sinica Research Award for Junior Research, Merit NSC Research Fellow Award and Outstanding Research Award, awarded by National Science Council, National Health Research Institutes and Academia Sinica. Similarly, students have also received several awards, like Poster Award Winner or other scholarships, offered by NTU medical school or foreign research institute. The department now has 64 PH.D. students, 57 master students in studying. Students in this department cultivate the comfortable learning atmosphere along with instructors and cooperate rather than compete with each other. To promote communications between students and faculties, we also hold several activities like the department sports or parties recently. The total number of full-time faculty members is 13; those who excel in their own field research offers graduate and medical students broad and comprehensive training. The persistent and constant goal of this department is to train students to become excellent independent researchers. Because of this faith, we could absolutely give assurances that the decision to attend us is one of the best you make.
